Which remote works with Teleprompter Mirror Pro?

Short answer: a second phone or tablet running the same app. Not a Bluetooth clicker — and this guide explains why that turns out to be the better deal, how to set it up in about two minutes, and what to do if it will not connect.

Bluetooth clickers and page turners

The app does not respond to hardware key presses, so presentation remotes, page-turner pedals and Bluetooth keyboards will not control it. We would rather tell you that here than have you buy one to find out.

1. The prompter shows a code

On the device that will display your script, open Remote and switch to “Be the prompter”. Turn Discoverable on.

2. The second device scans it

On the device you will hold, open Remote and tap “Scan a QR code”. Point it at the prompter’s screen.

3. You have a remote

Transport, speed, text size, scripts and the record button — plus a mirror of the script itself.

Put both devices on the same Wi-Fi

The two devices talk to each other directly across your network. They do not need internet access, but they do need to be on the same network, and that network has to allow devices to see each other.

On the prompter, open Remote and switch to "Be the prompter"

This is the device that will show your script — the one in the rig or on the tripod. Turn Discoverable on. It shows a QR code and a 4-digit pairing code.

On the second device, open Remote and tap "Scan a QR code"

Point it at the prompter’s screen. It connects straight away, without waiting to discover anything. This is the fastest route and the one that works on networks where device discovery is blocked.

Or pick the prompter from the list and type the code

If the camera is not free, the second device lists any prompters it can find on the network. Tap yours and type the 4-digit code shown on its screen. You only do this once per pair of devices.

Scanning is the reliable route. The QR code contains the prompter’s address, so the remote dials it directly instead of searching for it. On guest, hotel and conference Wi-Fi — where device discovery is usually blocked — it is the only route that works.

Second display

The prompter pushes the script to the remote, so it doubles as a confidence monitor for whoever is standing off camera. This is the part a two-button clicker cannot do.

Troubleshooting

When it will not connect.

These are the messages the app actually shows, and what each one means.

“Looking for a prompter” and nothing ever appears

Why: Device discovery uses multicast, which guest, hotel and corporate networks routinely filter. It is also the first thing a VPN breaks.

Fix: Scan the QR code instead — it carries the prompter’s address, so it never needs discovery. This is the reliable route on any network you do not control.

“Could not search the local network”

Why: iOS asks for Local Network permission the first time the app looks for other devices. If it was declined, discovery cannot run.

Fix: Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network, and turn Teleprompter on.

“Could not reach that device”

Why: The prompter was found but the connection did not complete — usually the two devices are on different networks, or one has since moved to cellular.

Fix: Check both are on the same Wi-Fi. A phone on 5G and a phone on Wi-Fi cannot see each other, even side by side.

“That prompter turned up on the network but is not accepting connections”

Why: The prompter is advertising but its host is not running — usually because the app was backgrounded or Discoverable was switched off.

Fix: Open the app on the prompter and check Discoverable is on in Remote › Be the prompter.

The pairing code is not accepted

Why: Codes are regenerated when the app restarts, and repeated wrong attempts are deliberately rate-limited.

Fix: Read the code off the prompter’s screen again. If it still refuses, tap New code on the prompter and try that.

“Update this device to pair with it”

Why: The two devices are running app versions that speak different protocol versions. Connecting anyway would half-work in ways that are hard to diagnose, so it is refused outright.

Fix: Update both devices to the current version.

Which remote will work with the app?

A second iPhone, iPad or Android device running Teleprompter Mirror Pro. That is the only remote the app supports. Pair the two over your own Wi-Fi and the second device gains a full control surface — transport, scroll speed, text size, script switching and the record button — as well as a mirror of the script itself.

Do Bluetooth presentation remotes or page-turner clickers work?

No. The app does not respond to hardware key presses, so Bluetooth clickers, presentation remotes, page-turner pedals and Bluetooth keyboards have no effect. We would rather say that plainly than have you buy one and find out. A second device does considerably more than a two-button clicker anyway — it shows you the script, the scroll position and the recording state, which a clicker cannot.

Does remote control need an internet connection?

No. The two devices talk to each other directly across your local network. There is no relay server and no account, so it works on an isolated network, in a venue with no usable internet, or behind a captive portal that never lets you sign in.

Do I need Pro on both devices?

Only on the device running the prompter. The device acting as the remote does not need its own subscription.

How far away can the remote be?

As far as your Wi-Fi reaches. Both devices connect to the network rather than to each other directly, so range is your router’s range, not a Bluetooth radius.

Can more than one remote connect at once?

Yes. The prompter accepts several at the same time — for example one person driving playback and another following the script as a confidence monitor.

Can the remote show the script as well as control it?

Yes. The prompter pushes the loaded script to the remote, so the second device doubles as a confidence monitor for a producer, director or co-host standing off camera.

Can I use a laptop or desktop browser as the remote?

Not currently. The remote is the mobile app on a second device. There is no desktop or browser build.

Is the connection secure?

Pairing requires a 4-digit code shown on the prompter, and repeated wrong codes are rate-limited. Both devices also check they are running compatible protocol versions and refuse the connection with a clear message rather than half-working. Nothing is routed outside your network.

Does the prompter have to have a script open before I pair?

No. Pair first, then pick a script from the remote — it can browse the prompter’s library and load one. If you try to drive playback with nothing loaded, the remote tells you to open a script first.
